Versatile and Flexibile
The Polytube, or ‘shell and tube’ heat exchanger is one of the most common tubular heat exchangers. It is rugged and adaptable, with a range of sizes and styles to suit any heating or cooling application – particularly those that utilise steam as a heating medium.
The shell and tube is a collection of tubes that have been welded or bolted together to form a compact bundle within a shell. Hipex fully welds all joints to eliminate the need for gaskets (and thus maintenance) while also creating a food-grade tube path. The Polytube can be used as a heater, cooler, steam heater, or as a refrigeration-based direct expansion unit. On the tube side, end caps can be constructed to make these units single- or multi-pass.
Tube plates are available in a variety of sizes and with a variety of terminations, including flanges, BSM threads, and others. Hipex’s state-of-the-art equipment provides an economical means of producing tube plates that are custom-designed for a single application.

The following table summarises the standard sizes of Hipex’s Polytube heat exchangers, but custom units can be designed to meet your specific requirements. The majority of these standard units are also available as pressure vessels that comply with various pressure vessel codes.
